Betafence, world market leader market in fencing, access control and detection systems, is the
first producer to have been granted an EC label for its gabions.
These welded mesh baskets – also known as gabions – are intended to be filled with various materials and used for the layout of gardens and landscaped areas.
Recognition of quality With the award of the CE label (European Conformity) to Betafence gabions, the EOTA (European Organisation for Technical Approvals) confirms that this product fulfils the quality and safety requirements as described in the European New Approach Directives. Products with a EC mark have free access to the whole market within the EU (European Union).
Betafence is the first gabion producer to be awarded an EC label for this type of product. It is an important recognition that allows Betafence to distinguish itself as an innovative and influential company in its field, but also to offer additional quality guarantees to gabion installers and end-users.
Products that are both ecological and creative
Initially, gabions were mainly used in inland waterway applications, as supports and to combat erosion. But gabions are also employed in other areas: walls, anti-noise screens, flood protection, facade claddings, architecture, etc. Gabions are still very useful from an economic and an ecological point of view for this type of infrastructure work.
Gabions can be filled with various types of material, according to the desired use and to ensure the best possible blending with the surroundings. In addition to stone, sand, soil and gravel, recycled materials are also used, which are resistant to freezing and pressure, that are perfectly suitable for the foundation and filling of gabions. Examples of this are construction debris, recycled concrete, etc.
The ecological value of gabions lies in the plants used. Certain species of plants have a favourable effect on the removal of fine particles. - Fine particles in the atmosphere constitute one of the principal dangers to health. They create or aggravate serious diseases of the respiratory tract. - but the leaves of the plants absorb these particles, which the rain then washes into the soil. Moreover, the plants ensure a pleasing integration with nature, or bring an added value at the aesthetic level in urban centres.
