SECURIFOR - MERKSPLAS - BELGIUM

The prison Merksplas used to be agricultural colony, but is now a house with a semi-criminal regime. It consists of eight pavilions.

The Haven, a department for 60 mentally retarded inmates, was put into use in 2009. The establishment has room for 671 inmates. Most of these places are occupied since March 2010 by +/- 350 internees. The 321 convicts are mainly situated in the criminal category to ten years. On a large site (over 66 hectares), the institution is divided into ten pavilions. Only two pavilions have individual cells. Now the prison premises are secure thanks to a combination of Betafence fencing and perimeter control. Securifor panels were installed to prevent inmates escaping and to keep unwanted visitors outside.

For further perimeter control, a Securifor swing gate was also installed, together with a Robusta SC gate. All these products are in a black RAL 9005 colour.
