Betafence upgrades security of the largest refinery

Betafence was awarded the perimeter security upgrade contract at Statoil

Betafence, the worldwide leader in the market for comprehensive solutions for high-security perimeter protection, was awarded the perimeter security upgrade contract at Mongstad, Statoil’s largest oil refinery in Norway.  Betafence was awarded the contract following a successful tender and an extensive Health, Safety, Environmental & Quality practices pre-qualification process and verification audit.

As the main contractor, Betafence is responsible for project management of the complete solution.

This comprises replacing the present perimeter fence, with 2.2 km of Betafence’s fence system and access control.  The harsh environmental conditions in Norway combined with the facility’s proximity to the coast were of particular concern.  A heavy polyester coating on top of Zincalu® protected wires was chosen which provides superior protection against corrosion and extends the solution’s lifetime considerably.

Betafence also controls the entire supply chain involved and will deliver the materials from its plant in Sheffield, UK.  The solution will be supported and maintained by Betafence for ten years.

“Betafence has successfully evolved from a fence manufacturer to a high-security total perimeter solution provider to the Oil & Gas industry,” said Michele Volpi, CEO of Betafence.  “We are proud of this transformation and the value we are adding for Statoil and their Mongstad refinery through our project management capabilities.”

Partnering with local contractors Solheim Gjerdenett AS and Hansen & Eknes AS, the project kicked off in April 2015 and is expected to be completed within eight months.

Statoil is an international energy company with operations in 36 countries. The company is headquartered in Stavanger, Norway with approximately 23,000 employees worldwide. At Mongstad Statoil is involved in an oil terminal, oil refinery, gas processing plant, combined heat and power plant and a CO2 technology centre.
